Feast Your Eyes On The Cutest Mermaid Doll Yet (And Wait’ll You See What’s In Her Diaper)

Is there any fantastical creature more aspirational than a mermaid? Whether you grew up loving Darryl Hannah, Ariel, or some lesser pop culture she-fish (sorry, Gen Z, just facts here), chances are the only thing stopping you from wearing a shimmering tail to school 24/7 was needing the ability to walk upright. And we’re not too proud to admit we’re still kind of obsessed with mermaids. So when we heard about the Baby born Mermaid Surprise doll, we knew it was the perfect holiday gift for us—we mean, our kids—to play with. Here’s why:

She’s Like Three Dolls in One

Listen, it’s 2020 and women can be more than one thing (try like 50 things at once), so we stan a multitasking baby doll! Each Baby born Mermaid Surprise doll comes adorably swaddled in a colorful scaled blanket complete with a sparkly mermaid tail. But once you unwrap her, she’s got legs! This helps a lot when it’s time to sit her in her shell-shaped tub and douse her in ice water to reveal a secret hair color, which develops into one of three sweetly punk-rock shades of pink, purple, or blue (the seashells on her headband change color, too.) She’s a mermaid, she’s a baby doll, she’s a bathing doll, she changes color, and that’s not even counting what you’ll find in her diaper (something fun, we promise)…

She’s Full of–Wait for It–Surprises!

Each Baby born Mermaid Surprise comes with a fun starfish-shaped pouch that dissolves in water to reveal an iridescent swimsuit, in case your baby dislikes taking her ice bath in the nude. She also comes with two adorable miniature diapers and a plastic bottle (oh yeah, she’s basically a potty doll, too, NBD!) Give her water and change her, and you’ll find a cute plastic charm where you would normally find a much less pleasant surprise (ever attentive to detail, Baby born also hides a secret pattern on the inside of the diaper). There are two extra charms included with the bathing suit, and a charm bracelet to store them on.

For added mystery fun, each doll comes with a key to figuring out her name and birthday; her secret hair color and eye color reveal the name, and the diaper charms each correlate to a birth month. Kids can even fill out a birth certificate including birth city and star sign. Each baby comes with a pre-assigned “personality”: Bubbly, Sweetheart, or Dreamer; which, while they may not be anyone’s top three descriptors after the hot garbage year we’ve had, are certainly 2021 vibe goals.

She’s Works Like a Charm (Pun Intended) at Bathtime

Quick, what’s worse: getting a kid to bathe or changing a toddler’s diaper? Just kidding, they’re equally terrible! But nothing motivates a reluctant child like a doll who can offer them moral support through the ordeal of personal hygiene. We’re fairly certain whoever came up with the Baby born Mermaid Surprise has small children, because making pouring water over the doll’s head a fun surprise as opposed to a screaming nightmare is—dare we say—genius. And finding a collectible charm inside a “dirty” diaper? Come on, give these people an award or something.

She’s Utterly Giftable

We’ve all experienced the post-unwrapping blues that can arrive on the heels of holiday cheer, but since it packs so many fun surprises and accessories into one package, we think the Baby born Mermaid Surprise is the perfect gift to keep kids busy for days (if not weeks) after the season’s festivities have wound down. And look, if a hypothetical mom wants to sneak downstairs after everyone’s asleep and indulge in a little creative play while whisper-singing mermaid anthems, that’s nobody’s business but mine. I mean, hers. Hypothetically.
