Holiday ad shows a dad and his son enjoying the same song throughout the years — and it’s extremely sweet

A parent embarrassing their child is a time-honored tradition passed down through generations, but it’s actually extremely endearing, especially once that child becomes a parent themselves and sees first-hand the love behind the goofiness. That’s exactly the sweet vibe captured in this French commercial chronicling the adorable relationship between a father and son — and the “dad” dance moves they came to share.

French telecom brand Bouygues put out the most touching holiday-themed commercial that shows a father grooving out to Redbone’s 1973 hit “Come and Get Your Love” over the years as his son grows from infancy to adulthood. It’s pretty much the sweetest thing ever and before we talk about it, just watch.

Come and get your love? More like come and get these onion-chopping ghosts because, OMG. It’s all too much.

It starts out with a young father cueing up a cassette tape to play the song while his baby boy watches, totally captivated in the way little ones are with their parents.

Moving on to a few years later, in public, this dad can still get away with dancing in front of his kid and having him be only delighted. Those years don’t last long, as any parent with a cranky middle schooler knows, which just makes it sweeter.

On to the teen years, which can be a real mixed bag. The young man quietly tolerates his dad’s dorky dance moves in the confines of their car, even smirking a tiny bit, but it’s obvious the magic has worn off a bit and the embarrassment is setting in. Our hearts.

A few years later, while sitting in a cafe, the dad’s cell phone rings and to his horror, the son realizes that their special tune is now his father’s ring tone. Let the adorkable public dad dancing commence, as the son has a “please God, make me disappear now” look on his face.

Fast forward to Christmas, quite a few years later. Dad is home with mom, enjoying a quiet evening by the tree, when they hear a strange buzzing sound. It’s one of the gifts under the tree, and low and behold, it’s a phone — with their son coming full circle and their song blaring.

As he dances with his own baby boy.

If you’re not a total puddle of tears by now, we don’t even know what to say.

It’s a commercial, so clearly, it’s meant to sell phones — but it’s doing a whole lot more than that. Sometimes, it’s truly the simple things that help connect us with beloved family. A shared song, TV show, movie, or joke and the ability to pass it on to a new generation. This dad was tender and loving and goofy with his son, unafraid to act silly all in the name of strengthening their bond, and it seems that it stuck.

Now, another child will have the chance to be giggly and then kind of humiliated by his father’s nerdy dance moves — and it feels so right.
