These photos of a little girl meeting her hero garbage man are going viral

Every kid has a hero, and for one Illinoise little girl named Brooklyn, that person is her local garbage collector, Delvar Dopson. Every Thursday morning, Brooklyn waits for Dopson to drive by their house so she can wave, and recently on her birthday, she gave him a sweet surprise that’s blossomed into the world’s most adorable friendship.

In a post on Facebook, Brooklyn’s mom, Traci Andracke, writes that her daughter has been obsessed with her garbage man for months. “It started with waving from the window,” she says, “then we had to try and be outside to wave, and when we missed the truck driving by the house, I’d drive around the neighborhood to find the garbage truck and wave on our way out the door in the mornings.”

Recently, Brooklyn had a birthday and was anxious to share her special birthday cupcakes with her hero. She and her mom wrapped up one of the cupcakes and went outside to wait for Dopson’s truck. “When he came down our street, Brooklyn ran to the corner,” writes Andracke. “We were waving like usual and I motioned for him to come over by us. He pulled over, got out and gave us his BIG smile. Brooklyn was instantly speechless as she handed him the cupcake.”

Andracke says she explained to Dopson that he makes their day every Thursday, and they’re so grateful for the kindness he always shows. Dopson then surprised the mom by admitting he looks forward to seeing them every week too. “He said that he has a meeting every Thursday morning and always tries to get out of there in a hurry so that he can make sure to see us every week,” she explains. “He said he doesn’t have any kids of his own, but he mentors several children and just loves them.”

She adds, “After he left, we continued onto daycare. Brooklyn was unusually quiet in the backseat. I asked her if she was okay, and she said, ‘Mommy, Im so happy.'” Andracke shared their story with the Public Works Department, and it eventually made it onto the official City of Bloomington Facebook page, where it’s been shared more than 2,000 times. Even sweeter? The next time Dopson stopped by Brooklyn’s house, he came armed with a bunch of belated birthday gifts for the little girl.

The great thing about kids is that they’re always willing to offer a smile or a kind word, and it’s adorable that this little girl found a grown-up friend who’s equally as invested in brightening her day. Their unlikely friendship is a testament to the power of a simple hello, and a great reminder that even the smallest encounters have the power to bring immeasurable joy into other people’s lives.
