When you start out blogging, the best way to get your name out there is through commenting on other blogs. It introduces you to fellow bloggers and puts your name on the map. Think of every single comment as a little calling card– they’re a reflection of you and the more entertaining or intriguing they are, the more likely people are to click and be brought to your blog. And become your readers.
Time flies when you’re busy commenting and it’s easy to spend hours on it. After you’ve been blogging a while, though, it becomes harder and harder to keep up with the constant commenting. There are only so many hours in the day and I, for one, really need that daily shower. So, I use social media sites to promote my blog, and also to support the blogs belonging to friends/readers of mine. It’s less time consuming than commenting and can be a great way to spread the bloggy love. And who doesn’t want more of that?
Twitter is my favorite social media application. I love the instant gratification of it. I love being able to keep in touch with people without having to get into long e-mail exchanges. I love finding cool posts others have tweeted and being able to share my own. But to be successful, you need to have a following. Start by following people you like. Interact with them. Follow basic Twitter etiquette. Use the countless Twitter tools out there. Once you get the hang of it, it’s fun! Especially so with a glass of wine.
StumbleUpon is lots of fun and quite addictive. Jennifer from Playgroups Are No Place For Children gives the best StumbleUpon tutorial out there. It’s super easy to get started and I do see a decent amount of traffic from it. I also try and Stumble great posts as soon as I read them. How it works remains a bit of a mystery– some posts take off and some don’t, but it’s always a nice effort to make.
Facebook is another way to promote your blog. You may want to consider creating a separate account just for your blog, and a making fan page. Slap your blogroll on there. Become fans of the pages belonging to your friends. Help spread the word about their blogs and they’ll do the same for you. Facebook can be so much more than your long lost high school BFF.
Kirtsy is known as “Digg for Chicks.” The sites operate the same way, each highlighting user-submitted content that makes it to the front page by being voted up by the community or chosen by the editors. Digg’s traffic potential is higher than traffic from Kirtsy, but Kirsty is geared just towards women. While you may not see thousands of visitors, it’s a really cool site run by really cool women, and definitely one worth playing around with.
There are countless others out there, too. Delicious is a popular bookmarking site, though I don’t personally use it. Linked In is another site that you can use to promote your blog, though it’s a bit too businessy for me (When you make up words, perhaps you don’t belong there.) There are countless, and you need to find the few that work for you. Once you do, connecting with people through them is a breeze. And, at the end of the day, that’s what blogging is all about.
What’s your favorite application? And, have you written anything lately that you’d like shared? Leave it in the comments and I’ll Stumble or Tweet it!

Twitter is my favorite application. It allow me to instantly connect with others and see all the cool links they tweet.
I had to delete my fb fan page because it became too time consuming for me. Maybe I’ll revive it one day.

I agree–I’m a Twitter girl all the way. I’m relatively new to Twitter, after resisting the trend for quite a while, but ultimately, resistance was futile and now I’m hooked!
I enjoy your tweets, and this is the first time I’ve clicked over to your blog and I really enjoy it too. Awesome photos on the left sidebar, by the way.

Excellent!
I’ve not figured out Kirtsy, but love that it’s run by and for women!
I’m still pondering the Facebook fan page…
I have a FB page, but I keep feeling like I should delete it and just concentrate on being ‘better’ at blogging and my other social media outlets that I like better, like Twitter. Am I losing a lot by not being active on my FB page??
Honey´s last blog ..Or You’ll End Up Like Your Great-Aunt Marie…
No, I don’t think you’re losing out. I think you need to find 2 or three that work for you and that’s it. Who has the time to do more? What I do like about Facebook is that it combines my personal friends and bloggy friends in a way that Twitter & Stumble don’t. But, twitter is by far my favorite.
Great post! would love more infor about the BBC (bloggy boot camp!)
Sure! It’s run by SITS and a nice and small conference.
Here’s what they have coming up and here is a link to more info: http://www.bloggybootcamp.com/

You explain these “social media” thingy quie simply and so well. A well done post. I wish I can attend the Bloggy Boot Camp and hear you speak. I met you via Twitter and Twitter is one of my favorite SM tools. That’s where I saw the link to this post too that led me to comment here. See, it works!

This is a great post. I’m going to share it with some friends who are newbies.
I started a fan page for my blog a couple months back, and I really like having it. I was only using Networked Blogs before, but that’s an application and many people don’t like to download Facebook apps, so that alienates certain people. The Facebook fan page is great because most people love to become fans of things, and I can have the interaction with people there that I really enjoy.

Awesome post.
It took me awhile to get used to Twitter but its become slightly addictive. There are so many phenomenal blogs out there that I love reading but I find that weeks will go by where I don’t visit or have time to comment. I had no idea that Social Media was so time intensive. Fun and worth but you really have to work at it.

Great post with lots of useful information. That is one area where I feel like I am drowning. Trying to keep up with commenting on other blogs. I can spend hours doing it and then realized I totally neglected my blog {when I should of been writing posts, etc.}. Look forward to meeting you next weekend!
I too use Facebook and twitter to help out my art work and blogging. It has become very fun to share my work this way. I have met new friends, come across great people. It is a wonderful way to interact with people.

This is such great advice Jill! Love it! I know it goes against blog-etiquette, but I’m really not into promoting my blog these days. I used to – and if I had read this post last year I would have followed all your advice. I tried twitter back then, and just not got into it. I don’t even have an account anymore, and I’m not doing any of these other apps either – but if, one day, I ever want to promote my blog you can be sure I’ll reference this post – it’s a gold mine of information! I hope you have so much fun at the conference next week – it’s so fun to meet bloggers in person! Yahoo!

I’ve posted this to my facebook wall, I know a bunch of mommy bloggers that could use the help. I started my blog in January of 2006 and then I neglected it to have an affair with Facebook for a while. The grass isn’t greener on the other side… :-) I’m back to blogging – I remember why I loved it so much!
Thanks for leaving me a comment on my post about my son. I’ll have to go outside the school for testing, ours doesn’t supply that.

I have the hardest time with the social media aspect of blogging. I work 50+ hours a week and try to blog 3-4 times a week. On top of that I have been working on setting up my photography gallery and taking and editing pictures. I have feedburner set up to tweet as soon as I post, but that’s usually all I tweet. I did set up a LinkedIn and I really like that one since I’m working on a photography business it seems to fit me best. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
I do love social networking. I live in the middle of nowhere so it’s a great replacement for real adult human contact. :) It’s good for my blog too, but it’s mostly good for my sanity. Great post and I look forward to connecting with you on Twitter!

I just can’t seem to “do” twitter. I don’t know if I’m too ADD for it or if it is too ADD for me. I try to go on a few times a week, but it moves so fast so I know I miss things. I like the relationship building aspect of commenting. It just seems more personal to me, but I can see how it would get crazy when you receive a ton (i.e., way more thanme) of them. I guess I really need to work on building that fan page.

I think Facebook is my favorite, but over time I’ve changed the way I’ve used it to promote my blog. Even though I have a lot of friends & family who are readers, I created the fan page so people could “opt in” to see when a new post was up (though I still pop some posts on to my personal page now and then). I also try to direct most of my kid-related updates to the fan page and Twitter and be more diverse on my personal account…But at the end of the day I just can’t help yakking about kids and motherhood all over the virtual and actual place. :)

It is reassuring to read about a fellow blogger who is also experiencing success. Oddly, this is the second article I’ve read about this today. Wonder if the universe is trying to tell me something.
For work, I use a lot of social media sites – Twitter, Kirtsy, Digg, MommyBlips, Savvy Source, Stumbleupon, delicious, Yahoo! Buzz, Googlebuzz, reddit, and of course Facebook.
For play, the only one I ever turn to is Twitter. Which is of course how I got to this lovely article!

I like it for security. It’s just a way to keep your last name and details out of the bloggy world. Totally your call though!

I think that if you have a blog, then it is what you need.
Tell people about something, someone is advertising, to somebody else for something else.
Personally, I think so.
Here I have a blog about my travels, but I can not share them with people, because somebody would write that this is spam.
A hoster will also kick :)
thanks so much for the info…Im lovin’ me some twitter right now and just getting started!
Its all self-serving mind manipulation.. lol.. Some are just craftier at it than others.. Once people figure out how you’re doing what you do, then it becomes a “no no”, and you have to figure out another way to make people buy into what you’re selling.. For some, subtlety works.. For some its the in your face approach.. Depends on the person really, and how the stars align for that individual.. If that makes sense?.. Anyway, great article.. Thanks
