Making Your Blog into a Book

My purpose in starting Scary Mommy was to create a baby book of sorts for my kids. I am not the type of mother who jots down first words, steps or foods, and my memory cannot be counted on to remember anything. I have to force myself to print pictures, and despite loving crafts I’ve never jumped on the scrapbooking bandwagon. A blog seemed like a fun way to track our days together, the good the bad and the ugly. And it has been.

As 2008 drew to a close, I began working feverishly to transform my blog from the past year into book form. It was an enormous pain in the ass, as the site I picked (blurb.com) wasn’t compatible with blogger at the time. It took forever, as I had to manually import every single picture and entry. But for 50 bucks, I have a copy of my blog in hardcover. I hand designed each page– some have only text, some only photos and most a mix of both. You can use any fonts available on your computer and totally customize everything. I can’t give them a totally glowing review; there is no way to ever speak to an actual person, the binding on my first book was defective and needed to be replaced, and the system crashes pretty frequently. But, it was worth it, and I love it. And it’s giving me renewed reason to keep writing in 2009.

Did you ever consider publishing a book of your blogs for others to buy? Would love to know your thoughts on that process. Thanks!

There is a new one, http://blog2print.sharedbook.com/blogworld/printmyblog/index.html

However, I use a lot of photos on my blog and there were only 2 options to customize. It ended up putting more than one post on a page, so back to Blurb I went. It isn’t too bad if you keep up with it as you write and save a copy of every photo in a folder specifically for it.

My mother is very much into scrapbooking. Ever since I was born she had one going. All the way to my ultrasound. It gives her something to do with her free time. http://www.fanimation.com

I CAN TOTALLY DO THIS FOR YOU AND/OR ANYONE ELSE THAT WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THIS DONE! I have made wedding books and picture books from photos for myself as well as other photographers. If anyone would like to contact me to have this done, I would be more than happy to quote you a price. Just email me at rtcrita@gmail.com I will try to put a post up by next week showing some examples of books I have done. Yes, you can have them custom made with all kinds of embellishments, too. The possibilities are endless!

I have kept a blog for the same reason since my daughter was born in 2007. I thought about doing the book too but didn’t since they weren’t compatible. But after seeing yours, I think I will have to for so many reasons. Thanks for sharing, it looks fabulous.

For some reason, I never made the connection between the new self publishing platforms and the keepsake for the kids. Awesome!

I love this! I actually just shared your post with some people tonight at a social media event. Can’t wait to do it with my own blog.

I love paper. I’m the mom who insists that all photos be printed and wishes there was still such as thing as a film camera… (bc that would actually mean the pics would be printed, instead of me just planning on printing them as the digital files add up) . The book is a great idea.
