Do you remember what Valentines Day was like pre-motherhood? No? Let me remind you of Valentines Day then and now…

Valentine's Day (Then and Now)

 Valentine’s Day Then and Now

Then: The day before Valentine’s day, get self a bikini wax, new flirty undies, ingredients for a romantic dessert.

Now: The day before Valentine’s day, clean up blood and gore from a scooter accident, wipe snot off shirt, run to grocery store for gauze and medical tape.

Valentine’s Day, Then and Now

Then: The night before Valentine’s day, order Thai food, take a warm bubble bath, paint toes, drink a glass of wine, cuddle with spouse.

Now: The night before Valentine’s day, eat pizza on the couch, watch a Hawaii 5-o re-run, juggle the two warm bodies on lap so there’s room for the cat.

Valentine’s Day, Then and Now

Then: Valentine’s Day morning. Surprise! Breakfast in Bed! (Meal: champagne, orange juice, naked man.)

Now: Valentine’s Day morning. “Surprise!” Breakfast in Bed. Which is zero surprise because the little one spilled the whole lot of goods yesterday, enraging the elder. (Meal: orange juice, an apple, huge slab of butter…oh wait, toast.) Attempt to eat while two excitable children demons frolic/fight on the bed. Strip sheets from bed. Start washer. Wander into kitchen. Clean up huge mess.

Valentine’s Day, Then and Now

Then: Valentine’s Day gift: box of Godiva chocolates, savored slowly over a week, all to yourself. Thoughtful, mushy card.

Now: Valentine’s Day gift: box of truffles from Target, devoured greedily in three hours, not one piece of it yours. This card.

Valentine’s Day, Then and Now

Then: Valentine’s Night: dinner at a little chic restaurant, champagne, epic nookie, fall asleep in spouse’s arms…cozy, content, grateful.

Now: Valentine’s Night: frozen potstickers, champagne, TiVo’d episode of American Idol, garbage out, clean hamster cage, break up fisticuffs downstairs before blood is drawn. Lurch into bed two hours ahead of spouse…haggard.

Valentine’s Day, Then and Now

Hey, at least the champagne was a consistent element, right? And thank goodness sloppy kisses and hand-crafted Valentines make it all worthwhile…right? Even if the little one draws you with enormous jazz hands?

Even though I’m kid free, the cat is SOOO needy this time of year. It’s all, “Why are you eating things I can’t have?” and “Pet me, pet me, STOP PETTING ME!” I OD her on catnip so I can enjoy my food in peace on the couch, just in case you were wondering how awesome of a parent I would be.

Anyway, love you Kitch. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your big and little ones ;)

Things do change once there are kids in the picture that is for sure. I always like the hand made valentine cards from kids.
What I did is let the kids know that this was a day to share the love and made it a family evening. With toddlers they made valentine’s for dad when he got home. We had the balloons we put on everyones chair for dinner. And than we tired them little curtain climbers out, so they went to bed earlier and had our champagne and the rest is history.

Thanks Dana for a trip back in history. Happy Valentines Day!

That’s how we celebrate the day, too. It’s about all of the people we love, in all forms.

Ha. Then can kiss my ass. I am totally loving and preferring the Now because it’s fun to figure out how to not quite get back to Then but make Now just as memorable. Remember Then when we used to hump in the open, anywhere we pleased? Well Now it’s fun to sneak into the upstairs bathroom and tell little-handed knockers that daddy is helping mommy fix something and can’t come out for at least 4 minutes. Now has totally upped our improvisational skills.

Yeah the “now” of this year really puts a damper on things. Nothing like a 8+ lb kid knocking around inside of you and an almost 2 year-old running around outside to squelch the romance! However hearing the one outside exclaim “Happy Bir-day!” while trying to say “Happy Valentine’s Day” is priceless. Thai food and a bubble bath sounds marvelous however….

I have never had a bad experience and really appreciate all the Valentine’s love that comes my way, but I am just not inspired by Valentine’s Day like I am by St. Patrick’s Day. Maybe it’s the endless aisles of red hearts filled with old chocolate wrapped in miles of cellophane that fill the grocery store right after Christmas. Maybe it’s the idea of a diaper-clad, winged Cupid trying to shoot me. I don’t have a problem with Valentine’s Day being a more “commercial” holiday; aren’t they all. I love materialism, consumerism, and Hallmark…I am just not crazy about Valentine’s Day.
I did have a little fun this year, my 16 years old 11th grade class sells candy grams to the school to earn money for prom…I bought everyone in the 11th grade (14 kids) a candy gram and signed them, Love Mom OXOXO. You know what I always say…if you can not torture your kids why have them! And that includes friends.

What? People’s ‘then’ actually looked like that? Huh. Well, mine sure didn’t and I like my now a lot better. Now I get a handmade card and lots of kisses from my little one. My husband loves me every day and I don’t need Hallmark to tell me so.

Just like everything else, Valentine’s Day evolves and develops. One year I got the bright idea to buy strawberries and marshmallows, along with ingredients to make chocolate fondue. Family fondue night became a V-Day tradition for a few years after that. Life circumstances have necessitated being away from my new husband tonight, might be time to bring back the tradition!

Never fear….the THENs will return. As the mom of 2 who are now 23 ad 27 and both married to Valentine’s of their own, I am hear to tell ya that the Thens will make a comeback, although maybe not with the same Valentine and definitely not with the same body or face, but lovely just the same. And of course you might miss the kiddie Valentine shenanigans, but only for a second. Hang in there, Mamas.

I don’t know why, but something about the cleaning of the hamster cage on Valentine’s night tickled me silly. I am sitting here looking at last night’s dinner dishes, a heap of Legos, and ten bajillion pieces of madly ripped-apart paper from school Valentine’s, and I’m pretty sure this day is not ending with epic nookie.

Jenny,
Don’t worry about the zero-epic nookie. I’d worry more about the Legos. You tread on those suckers in the middle of the night and are crippled for weeks.

Kitch, “now” are the Valentines you will look back on fondly and when you’re free to do all that gushy stuff again, you might just not be as willing and able, lol! Seriously, the hubby and I in the grocery store: Him: (looking at the card isle) Did you get me a card? I shake my head no, and he says, “Good, then I don’t have to get you one, right?” I tell him no. Then he asks if I want flowers or candy and I tell him no. Then he asks if we can be fine just going out to dinner a day earlier than the “big day”. I smile and say “perfect”, and I really mean it. I actually miss those days of the kids’ glitter and glue Valentines and rolling in toast crumbs in the bed….Oh, man…suddenly I feel sooo old!

Sadly, the Tivo’d American Idol part was very true for us last night…after a romantic candlelit dinner though, so it counts…right?

As for babies being a cockblock, our first Valentine’s Day as parents, DH prepared an amazing multi-course meal to be consumed after the baby went to sleep. She went to sleep…and just as we were biting into our scrumptious appetizers, woke up screaming (teething, 8 months old at the time) and wouldn’t calm down for several hours. At which point, the food was cold, the mood was gone, and we were both exhausted. Epic. Fail.

Valentines night today: both u and hubby go to sleep with noise cancelling headphones on so baby wont wake us up. Pull them off half way thru night due to feeling guilty for wearing them.

Man, I really want to take a bubble bath now, but my kid pooped in the bath tub for the first time a couple nights ago… and it’s just not as relaxing now that I’d be lying naked on a surface I scraped raw shit off of.

You get over that feeling eventually right?
