Wind Down This Mother’s Day Weekend With These 10 Dramatic TV Shows

Kids don’t come with a pause button, but these shows do.

Laura Linney and Jason Bateman in Season 4 of Ozark.

Ginny & Georgia (2021)

Think Gilmore Girls, but much, much darker. As Ginny deals with the struggles of adolescence, she must also juggle her mysterious mother, Georgia, who may or may not be a criminal mastermind. Once you’re done with Season 1, no worries; Season 2 is right around the corner.

Elite (2018- )

If thrilling teen dramas are your jam, Elite is the show for you. After three average teens enroll in a prestigious private school in Spain, drama and deadly discord soon follow. This Spanish TV crime show will have you glued to the couch. It's kind of like Riverdale but double the teen angst and rebellion.

Married at First Sight (2014- )

Do you believe in love at first sight? Well, how about marriage? In this show, singles are matched by "experts" and spend their first in-person interactions married and on their honeymoons. Viewers get a front-row seat to their journey and whether they decide to stay together or split. It's romantic reality TV on steroids — filled with all drama.

The Sinner (2017-2021)

Who doesn't love to play detective? This anthology television series brings you to the scene of a new crime each season (Jessica Biel, who serves as an executive producer on the show, starred in the first season.) These mysteries will shock you and leave you guessing until the end.

Queen of the South (2016-2021)

Teresa may not be a mother, but she believes in protecting her chosen family at all costs. Played by Alice Braga, Teresa doesn’t just run a notorious drug cartel — she takes it to new heights. Her badass journey to jefe is pretty inspirational (ignoring all the illegal drugs and murder, of course). All five seasons of Queen of the South are available on Netflix for your binging pleasure.

Green Mothers' Club (2022- )

All is fair in love and motherhood (or however that phrase goes). In this Korean drama, five moms compete in their grade-school community to be the best mother. At best, these women are frenemies. But as they clash heads, they learn to grow as mothers and women along the way.

Anne with an E (2017-2019)

Was Anne of Green Gables your favorite book as a child? Then you’re going to love this coming-of-age series about her life. Anne is an orphan girl growing up in the 19th century, and although her struggles are great, she learns to find herself, love, and the confidence to stand on her own. It’s the perfect warm and snuggly series to cuddle up and watch with your kids at the end of your special day.

Grace and Frankie (2015-2022)

This is one of Netflix's longest-running shows for a reason. It follows the lives of Grace and Frankie, played by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. When their husbands reveal they have fallen in love with each other, the women bond over their dissolving marriages. Grace and Frankie's final season is streaming and ready to take you on a hilarious and equally emotional ride.

Ozark (2017-2022)

Can things get any worse for the Byrdes? The answer is yes. Ozark recently dropped the rest of their fourth and final season, and it'll sink your heart to the bottom of the Missouri River. The suburban Chicago family turned Mexican cartel money launderers are tested like never before. And everything is on the line — their family, future, and freedom.

Sweet Magnolias (2020- )

Sweet Magnolias may be one of the sweetest series on this list, but it’s just as juicy as the rest. This show is a romantic drama about three lifelong friends who support each other in life’s ups and downs. From family crises to career disasters, these women find a way to make it through in their South Carolina town, Serenity. The first two seasons are ready to watch on Netflix, and the streamer just confirmed a third is on the way.
