An All Black-And-White 'Steamboat Willie' LEGO Set Is Coming
The all black and white set pays homage to the S.S. Willie
If you like all things Mickey Mouse and LEGO, you’re going to want to check this out, stat. Celebrating the Walt Disney animated short that introduced Mickey and Minnie to the world and to honor the big cheese on his 90th anniversary, LEGO is releasing an adorable Steamboat Willie set.
The set pays homage to the 1928 film Steamboat Willie, where the world fell in love with Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend and better half, Minnie, rolling on down the river. The LEGO brick version of the S.S. Willie will be in all black, grey, and white giving it the perfect nostalgic feel.
According to LEGO, the steamboat will come with steam pipes that move up and down, a buildable bell, and paddle wheels that rotate when the boat is pushed along. It also comes with an adjustable crane to lift the “potato bin,” and assorted elements including the S.S. Willie boat name sign, a 1928 year sign, and a bridge that has space for one of the two minifigures.
Yes, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse minifigures are included, each with silver-colored decoration, plus a parrot figure thrown in for good measure. In the short, Mickey steers a steamboat down the river, entertaining his new passenger and eventual love interest, Minnie, by playing music out of the menagerie on the boat.
This was the first cartoon to feature a fully post-produced soundtrack, so it’s fitting the guitar and sheet music come inside. The set will be available on April 1st and will be priced at $89.99 at LEGO stores and online. The box will also include fun facts about the historic 1928 animated film and information about the set’s creator and LEGO designers, which came from LEGO Ideas Studio.
If you’ve not heard of LEGO Ideas, it’s a super cool way for the LEGO commoner to send in ideas they’ve always wanted to build. You can also scroll through other people’s ideas and vote on them to push them to the top. Then, LEGO and their review board chooses the best ones and creates them for the world to enjoy. These are the same folks who recently gave us LEGO Flintstones, so we continue to bow down to all the super creative people out there coming up with these ideas for us to enjoy.
They also came up with the LEGO Forma sets for adults, meant to help improve our mental health. They were designed to help reconnect us with a love of play and to help decrease anxiety, though that would probably depend on a person’s patience level whilst putting LEGO sets together in the first place.
The price tag for the S.S. Willie is a little hefty for sure, but this is perfect for a collector, someone who can’t say no to retro anything, or for those of us who are just a big kid at heart and are suckers for all that is Mickey Mouse.
