A Lesson On Bigotry To People Considering Voting For Trump

My message to people considering voting for Donald Trump:

Have you seen the Louis C.K. bit about how you don’t get to decide if you’re an asshole? It’s not up to you. When people tell you you’re an asshole, you don’t get to say, “Nope, you’re wrong,” because they’re telling you this because you act like an asshole.

This is why you’re getting so defensive about maybe supporting Donald Trump and having people call you a bigot.

Because, you see, YOU don’t get to decide if you’re a bigot or not. YOU don’t get to decide if you’re racist or not. What determines if you’re racist or bigoted is what you do, regardless of your justifications for doing so. So when brown people and Muslim people and Latino people tell you supporting Trump makes you a racist? You don’t get to say they’re wrong. Because they’re not. And when LGBT people tell you supporting Trump makes you a bigot, you don’t get to decide you’re NOT a bigot, because they’re not wrong.

Whether or not you personally want to round up Muslims and put all their names in a database, voting for somebody who wants to do that is racist.

Whether or not you want to deport every person with Latino heritage who’s been ACCUSED of a crime, whether or not they’re here legally, if you vote for somebody who does you’re a racist.

Whether or not you think Jews are evil and should be exterminated, voting for somebody who intentionally gathers the support of neo-Nazis and spreads their propaganda makes you a Nazi sympathizer. It just does.

Whether or not you personally think all LGBT people are going to hell and deserve to have their rights stripped from them, voting for somebody who wants to strip LGBT people of their rights makes you a bigot.

Whether or not you believe it’s okay to tell women they can only have their dream job if they perform sex acts on you, if you vote for somebody who has been accused of that and then HIRED somebody ousted from his longtime job for exactly that reason to coach him on his debate performance, you are a misogynist. You just are.

In short, if you DON’T think Muslims should be rounded up, you DON’T think all people from Latin America should be deported, you DON’T think gay people are monsters, and you DON’T hate women, but you vote for a person who stands for those things?

You’re saying, “Yeah, that guy speaks for me.”

And the rest of us in the sane world will believe you when you say that.
