Your little dude just chucked a remote control across the room and then got into a Bruce Lee inspired stance and screamed “HI YA!” Of course you want to laugh because that was funny. Hell, you probably want to grab the camera phone and take a picture to show your friends. This week we look at self-control… both yours and your kids’!

Kids will do the most insane shit to get your attention, but in order to squelch any potential behavioral problems it’s important to learn not to laugh at the goofy antics your child will resort to. Otherwise you’ll find yourself hiding in the pantry from your wild one and showing off your sternest mom face when you’re discovered, all just so that you can make a phone call.

Teaching a child how to exhibit self-control is about as easy as teaching a dog to speak French, but it can be done! The teaching the kid part, not the dog part. With enough consistency in rules of behavior, controlling your reactions to outburst and even those hilarious kid mess-ups, you will slowly find that your kid will learn to rein in his toddler terror.

Scary Mommy Tip: Keep your rules for good behavior simple and easy to follow for a young one. Some parents find sticker charts useful while others find consistency and easy rules to be the answer. Whatever works for you and your family is the best way to go!
