When I became a mother for the first time, I was so excited to decorate the nursery. I spent hours perusing Pinterest for inspiration. Soft colors, modern furniture, and lots of natural light were at the top of my must-have list. Not once did I consider what kind of sleeping environment I was creating for my mini-me.

I know that sounds crazy, right? How was I not thinking about sleep!? After all, sleep is all you think about once the baby arrives. When will they sleep? When will you sleep? How long can one person survive without sleep? So, yeah, creating a nursery or designated space that promotes sleep is important, and here’s how you do it.

1. Keep Calm and Sleep On

From the wall color to the crib linens, your goal is to create a peaceful, calming environment. Sunshine yellow may be a beautiful color, but nothing screams, “WIDE AWAKE!” quite like sunshine. Instead, opt for neutral colors or soft pastels. You may also want to consider adding a soothing sound machine to drown out household noise during nap times.

2. Natural Light Is Great, Just Not for Sleeping

Speaking of sunshine, you’re going to want to control when and how light filters into the room. Use room darkening shades like these honeycomb shades from Next Day Blinds to control natural light during sleep times. They can be easily lifted and lowered and come in cordless options for safety.

3. Comfy and Cozy, Like a Baby Cave

Your child’s nursery should be cozy and inviting for you and your baby. Use a plush rug, soft throw blankets for snuggling, and a comfy rocking chair to add charm and personal style to the space. You’ll be grateful for the soft rug the first time you crawl out of the room on your hands and knees. (Yes, you will totally do this so the baby doesn’t see you.)

4. Safety First

And last, but certainly not least, safety. Ensure that baby stays safe while sleeping by keeping the crib free of blankets, pillows, and plush animals. Secure cords and outlets with safety locks, and choose decor with baby’s safety in mind — like cordless shades or blinds. We definitely want the baby to use this room for sleeping, but just in case they climb out of bed in the middle of the night (they totally will) we want them to be safe.
