Your vagina is like human Spanx. It can stretch to accommodate your baby’s head and then go right back down to normal size. But like Spanx, stretching can take its toll.

Some women have to get an episiotomy. This is a surgical cut that helps to make the vaginal opening larger. If this is not done, some women can tear, and sometimes (but not often) women can tear from end to end. Sorry!

To prevent tearing and the need for an episiotomy, the doctor may perform a perineal massage. The OBGYN will massage the vagina to help increase the size. Sadly, it doesn’t always work.

What about your lips? Your labia should look the same after birth but they can tear, as well.

Series Description: Madge the Vag is a quirky mom on a mission to spread (literally) the word on everything vagina. She may have a 1950s wardrobe, but approaches women’s vaginal health in a refreshing way that is very today. Madge highlights a taboo topic or challenging issue many women face but may be afraid to talk about. She interviews experts on a range of topics like public hair, yeast infections and sex.
