Mulan is going to be yet another amazing Disney remake

Let’s get down to business, because Disney just released the first look teaser trailer for what’s sure to be yet another must-see live action remake: Mulan.

The 90-second trailer premiered during the final match of the Women’s World Cup (which the U.S. Women’s National Team won, by the way), and let me just say I set down my mimosa and paid attention when it hit the screen. Press play, and you’ll see why.

Yes, it is actually that beautiful. Yes, you can just watch it again right now. We will wait.

The imagery throughout the trailer is just absolutely stunning. And that voiceover!

“Quiet, composed, graceful, discipline, these are the qualities we see in a good wife,” the voice says over shots of Mulan training to defeat the Huns. “These are the qualities we see in Mulan.”

Qualities we see in a good wife? Psh, more like qualities we see in a champion warrior who’s about to help save China, NBD.

Disney has been knocking these live action remakes out of the park, and it looks like Mulan will be no different. According to the official description, it sounds like the plot is pretty much the same as the original animated classic: “When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.”

There are some things that will be different, though. Mulan’s love interest, Li Shang, has reportedly been replaced by a different character, and Disney is staying tight-lipped on the details about that. And eagle-eyed fans probably noticed there was no trace of Mushu or Cri-Kee in the teaser. Rumor has it they won’t be in the live action version, and will be replaced by a phoenix that will serve as Mulan’s animal guide in Mushu’s place. Not sure if we’re sold on that detail (or the loss of our beloved Mushu), but in Disney we trust.

Mulan will be played by Chinese-American actor Liu Yifei, who is sure to absolutely slay this role.

And while Mulan doesn’t hit theaters for almost a full year, there’s plenty of Disney goodness coming in the meantime, like the live action remake of The Lion King that drops next week. Just take all our money, Disney, all of it.
