6-Year-Old's Adorable Masked School Photo Goes Viral

by Kristina Johnson

His mom said to keep his mask on at all times

Mason Peoples’s mom told him to keep his mask on at school, and that is exactly what he did — he’s got a brand new, masked-up school portrait to prove it. The Nevada first-grader’s mama Nicole shared the story behind the now viral photo on Facebook, and it’s seriously too cute.

Her imagining of how that convo played out is absolutely hilarious:

“Photographer: Ok, take your mask off.

Mason: My mom said to keep it on all the time unless I’m eating and far away from everybody.

Photographer: I’m sure it’s ok to take it off for your pictures.

Mason: No, my mom seriously told me to make sure to keep it on.

Photographer: Are you sure you don’t want to take it off for 2 seconds?

Mason: No Thank you, I always listen to my mom!

Photographer: Ok, say cheese!

I’m so proud of him for sticking to his word but I should have been more clear about my rules on this day.”

HOW. STINKING. CUTE! Seriously, I want my child to listen to me about anything as hard as Mason did about masks.

Nicole’s post racked up tens of thousands of likes, shares, and comments, with an overwhelming number of them giving Mason props for being so awesome. The little boy was delighted to know that so many people got a kick out of his simple gesture, which is all the more impressive given how many adults are currently melting down on the regular about kids wearing masks in schools.

“Mason and I are overjoyed and in awe of the outpouring of love that we have received over his picture day school picture. He has read so many of your comments with the biggest smile on his face! He is so happy to see so many people proud of him and saying he did such a good job! (He is so proud!) All of you have made my little one’s day!! He is such a good kind hearted, caring, loving, smart, and helpful little boy. Thank you for showing him that his honesty and integrity will make a big difference in this world.”

The cute photo is the ultimate time capsule for the wild pandemic times we’re living in, and apparently Mason is far from the only kid who’ll have one. The company that did his school portraits told GMA that they give all kids the option to take their masks off or leave them on.

If your own kiddo’s got picture day coming up — you might want to have the talk beforehand about whether they’ll maskless or not — or you might end up with a hilarious surprise of your own.
