Gay Waitress In North Carolina Gets Bible Verse Instead Of Tip

A gay waitress in North Carolina says she was left a bible verse in place of a tip from a customer. It doesn’t matter what your religious beliefs are because this isn’t okay under any circumstances.

Most waiters and waitresses rely on tips to survive, so it is inexcusable to replace their tip with a form of discrimination. Personally, I don’t care if the service is shitty, you should always tip well. Why? Because most servers make very little money. The average waitress in North Carolina makes about $17,000, according to Indeed. The poverty line in the U.S. in 2014 was $12,000, according to the Institute for Research on Poverty. Do you see how close those numbers are? Always leave a tip.

Sadly, this story is so much more horrific, though, because the tip was replaced with a hateful message. Alexandra Judd told the NY Daily News that a customer wrote “lev 20.13” and “praying for you.” The verse, Leviticus 20:13, reads “If a man also shall lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” Is that really a message you need to send a stranger?

Judd had served brunch at Zada Jane’s Corner Cafe in Charlotte to a table of two women, who split their check. One woman left a tip, and the other left the Bible lecture. How did she even know Judd was gay? Unless she told her customer this personal fact, this hateful woman was assuming a lot about a stranger who was just there to make her meal enjoyable. For the record, Judd didn’t tell her.

In addition to leaving the Bible verse, the customers were allegedly disgruntled while at the restaurant. “They just wouldn’t talk to me, wouldn’t answer my questions,” she said. “They were really off, it was just rude.” A shocked and angry Judd crossed out the woman’s name before posting a photo of the receipt to Facebook. “I never thought people would discriminate against my sexuality that way,” Judd said.

Weeks ago North Carolina passed its ridiculous anti-LGBT House Bill 2 into law. “There’s a lot of hate in Charlotte right now,” she said. Ringo Starr, Cirque du Soleil, and Bruce Springsteen have canceled events in the state. Clearly it is time to get it together, NC! Various states, including New York and Washington have canceled non-essential travel to the state and are working on additional boycotts. The law forces people to use public restrooms of the “biological sex listed on their birth certificates.” Gov. Pat McCrory signed the insane bill into law.

Here’s the thing. You’ve shared a bathroom with a gay person and a transgender person. You’ve been served food by a gay person and a transgender person. You just didn’t know it because they’re too busy doing whatever it is they’re there to do – like use the bathroom or serve food. So quit worrying about it and stop making laws based off your ludicrous fear and don’t even consider replacing the money a hard-working server depends on and deserves with your propaganda.
