Jamie Spears speaks out after being terminated from Britney’s conservatorship

It’s official. Jamie Spears is no longer the conservator of Britney Spears‘s estate after a long, public, and traumatic legal battle. Despite the fact that Britney herself has said she’s “on cloud 9” in light of the news, Jamie insists that he was the best person for the job.

At a September 29, 2021 hearing, Jamie — who was conservator of Britney’s financial health — was removed and will be temporarily replaced by an accountant referred by Britney’s attorney. A woman named Jodi Montgomery remains conservator of Britney’s person. Britney seemingly alluded to the news by posting a video of her piloting a plane (symbolic much?) and writing, “On cloud 9 right now.” Her fiance Sam Asghari was less cryptic and literally wrote “Free Britney congratulations” after the news that Jamie was finally being forced to step down.

Thanks to the #FreeBritney movement, Britney’s own testimony in June, and the numerous documentaries about the subject, Jamie, and the conservatorship at large, was generally regarded as deeply controlling. From allegedly monitoring her phone messages and placing a recording device in her bedroom, to Britney’s own account of not being allowed to remove her IUD or have children. Britney has also stated that she is scared of her father.

Despite all this, Jamie released a statement, via his lawyer Vivian Thoreen, that he is very disappointed that he was removed from the conservatorship.

“For 13 years, he has tried to do what is in her best interests, whether as a conservator or her father,” the statement read. “This started with agreeing to serve as her conservator when she voluntarily entered into the conservatorship. This included helping her revive her career and re-establish a relationship with her children. For anyone who has tried to help a family member dealing with mental health issues, they can appreciate the tremendous amount of daily worry and work this required.”

As for everything we’ve heard about Britney’s dad over the years, his attorney says he had to bite “his tongue” to not respond “to all the false, speculative, and unsubstantiated attacks on him by certain members of the public.”

The lawyer goes on to say that removing Jamie is a “loss for Britney. Respectfully, the court was wrong to suspend Mr. Spears, put a stranger in his place to manage Britney’s estate, and extend the very conservatorship that Britney begged the court to terminate earlier this summer.” Jamie’s lawyer asked the court to suspend the conservatorship entirely during Wednesday’s hearing.

The statement ends with Jamie’s lawyer saying he only wants the best for his daughter but notes that they haven’t spoken in several months. Jamie may be mad and defensive but if he really cares about what’s best for his daughter, well, she seems pretty happy about the news.
