Gaga told Dr. Luke’s lawyer she should be ‘ashamed’ of herself

Redacted records from the ongoing legal battle between Dr. Luke and Kesha have been unsealed this week. Among the explosive testimony was a deposition given by Lady Gaga — and her words are ones everyone should read and applaud.

For those unfamiliar, record producer Dr. Luke (Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald) was sued by Kesha back in 2014 in a civil suit for infliction of emotional distress, sexual assault and battery, and employment discrimination. He then countersued for defamation and breach of contract, their legal battle continuing to this day.

As a part of the process, Lady Gaga was deposed back in September 2017 to give information pertaining to the lawsuits after text messages between the two surfaced. In the now unsealed documents obtained by The Blast, Lady Gaga’s lawyer began by informing Luke’s lawyer that the A Star Is Born star would testify but wanted them to be aware she was a sex abuse survivor. As a result, she was experiencing PTSD reactions and emotional distress.

“I just want everyone to understand that, as she has publicly stated in other contexts, as a sex abuse survivor, and I know this from my own personal experience with family members, there are trigger events, and this deposition has proved to be a trigger event for Ms. Germanotta,” her lawyer stated, making sure it was on the record that she was openly crying.

During the deposition, Lady Gaga explained that she first met Kesha at Luke’s home studio, where she saw Kesha in a back room in only her underwear. Over the years, Kesha began to confide in Lady Gaga about the alleged physical and sexual abuse at the hands of Dr. Luke.

“Well, she told me that he used power and manipulation in some fashion or some type of verbiage,” Gaga said of the allegations. “I am not repeating exactly the words that came out of her mouth, but that he used power and manipulation to control her, and that she had been given a happy pill, that he offered her something and that she took it, and that she woke up and didn’t remember, and that’s what she told me.”

When she was asked specifically about their first conversation about the alleged abuse, Gaga said, “What we discussed was, what I recall was her immense sadness and depression and fear. She was visibly very different than when I had seen her before, and – but I can’t say specifically what we spoke about. I just recall it was emotional and I wanted to be there for her.”

Dr. Luke’s lawyers asked Gaga if she thought Kesha’s allegations would hurt his reputation.

“Reputation, if you are asking about his reputation in the world, I don’t feel at liberty to speak for the entire world. So if you are asking what my view is of his reputation, I made my view of him and his reputation when I saw her in that back room. That was an image that – of something that happened to me, and I felt and knew in my heart that she was telling the truth, and I believe her.”

When Dr. Luke’s lawyer began her line of questioning, things got heated. “With respect to Mr. Gottwald himself, you have absolutely no personal knowledge or information as to any interaction between him and Ms. Sebert, correct, physical or otherwise?” she said to Gaga.

“Yes, I do have knowledge,” she said. “She told me he assaulted her.” When she pressed her further on the matter and if she’d personally seen any of this behavior, she said, “Well, you know – when men assault women, they don’t invite people over to watch. And when this happens in this industry, it is kept extremely secret, and it is compounded by contracts and manipulative power scenarios that actually include this very situation that we are all in right now.”

His lawyer asked Gaga about all the false rape accusations made by women against men who claim they are innocent. She was quick to shut that down.

“You – how about all of the women that are accused of being liars and how she was slut shamed in front of the world, how about that? I have factual knowledge of her depression. I have factual knowledge of her need for support and love. I have factual knowledge of the spiral that I watched that girl go down. I have factual knowledge of trauma. I am informed and intelligent about this issue. That girl has experienced serious trauma and she is in the middle of the right now. And you are all a party to it.”

“Why on earth would this girl tell the entire world this happened? Why on earth?” Gaga said. “Do you know what it’s like for survivors? Do you know what it’s like to tell people? Don’t you roll your eyes at me. You should be ashamed of yourself.”
