A man tried to mansplain periods and it’s quite possibly the stupidest thing you’ll read ever

Warning: there’s a whole lot of ridiculous mansplaining up ahead. A man wrote a Facebook post trying to explain why tampons aren’t expensive – and got literally all of his facts and figures wrong. Here’s a heads up – if you don’t have a blood flow every month, we really, really don’t need your opinion on the topic.

Twitter user @aisghair shared a screenshot of the guy’s Facebook post, along with the caption: “What a dweeb.” Here’s what a man who has never bought a tampon in his life had to say about buying tampons.

“So, the average period is between 10-35ml of blood, each tampon holds about 5ml, so 7 tampons per cycle,” he wrote [editorial note: LOL]. He then decided to be extra generous and say that it’s possible some women with an “extra juicy uterine lining” [editorial note: WTF] might need 10 tampons per cycle. So, basically, he concluded, women only have nine periods per year, which means “90 tampons max.”

Yup, so it turns out that our uteruses have decided that they only need a period nine months out of the year. The other three months are just a fun vacation.

Our mansplaining friend went on to tell all of us women that we can get a 64 pack of tampons for $7.90 plus shipping. “Buy two packs, save on shipping and have 128 tampons for the year, thats about $20 here or their for a years period,” he said. Then, he advised women to cut down on our “starbucks venti frapps and stop whining.”

Is it just me or does our period guru maybe have some unexplored issues with women other than the number of tampons they use every year? Perhaps something for him to consider.

Anyway, a whole lot of women on the internet were laughing at this completely bogus, wildly inaccurate tampon hot take.

One woman took the time to do her own math on the amount of money women spend on tampons – and it paints a much, much different picture.

“It’s medically dangerous to wear a single tampon for more than 8 hours, so let’s call it 6 hours/tampon. let’s call it 5 days of your period (altho lots of people have 6-7 days). that’s at least 20 tampons per period. TWELVE periods per year makes a minimum of 240 for the year,” Twitter user @ermahgerd_hi wrote. “We’re gonna add in a factor for people who change it more often than 6 hours. you’d buy 5 packs (320 tampons). by the cited $7.90 per pack + shipping, we get ~50 bucks. an average person would get about 450 periods in their lifetime. you end up with about $22,500 in a lifetime.”

So, yeah, our period guru might want to go back and check his facts and figures. Or remove himself from the conversation altogether. If you don’t have a uterus, we don’t need your opinion on this.
