Does this mean Megan Rapinoe for president?

Remember back before the U.S. Women’s National Team had crushed the World Cup and become back-to-back world champions? When the freaking president started a Twitter feud with the team’s co-captain and resident pink-haired badass, Megan Rapinoe, basically telling her to shut her mouth and win a trophy? Well, she never shut her mouth, and she did win the trophy. Did all this go down just a few weeks ago? Time is a strange construct in the political landscape of 2019.

Now, after the dust has settled a little bit, Rapinoe is revisiting the comment she made that kicked this whole situation off: When she said she wasn’t “going to the fucking White House.” I mean, she was never invited, but is that all that surprising? The USWNT stands for kindness, tolerance, and acceptance — things this White House openly and blatantly fights against.

But anyway.

Rapinoe made a post-World Cup win appearance on Vox’s Recode Decode podcast this week, where she was asked about the surreal experience of trying to do her job amid being openly and publicly called childish names by the President of the United States.

“This is crazy. I mean, what is going on? This is so insane,” Rapinoe told host Kara Swisher she was thinking after seeing the tweet.

“And I was also like, ‘You know what? This is so rude,” she continued. “You should be proud, like doing everything you can or not doing anything, right? To make this team successful. People are getting on board. It’s the World Cup. It’s America. You love America. Like, ‘Go USA.'”

Yes, “Go USA” would have been a more appropriate sentiment for the president to be expressing while a U.S. team kicked ass on the world stage. But Donald Trump is our president, and grace, kindness, and patriotism are not his strong suits. In fact, he seems hell-bent on inspiring just the opposite.

At the end of the podcast, Swisher asked Megan Rapinoe the question many people have wondered since her team returned home with that world championship title in hand: Would she go to the White House if Trump invited her now that she rose to his “challenge” and won?

LOL, nope.

She answered that the only reason she would set foot in the White House is if she were being “inaugurated.”

“Considering how much time and effort and pride we take in the platform we have, using it for good and leaving the game in a better place and hopefully the world in a better place, I don’t think I would want to go,” she added.

Hey, power to her. This White House doesn’t stand for a single thing she believes in, and there’s nothing more American than protest. Megan Rapinoe for president? We like the sound of that.
