Harry and Meghan named their newborn daughter after the Queen and the late Princess of Wales

She’s here! Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, otherwise known as the cool royals, have welcomed their daughter. And the lil babe, born on June 4, has the sweetest name ever: Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

The baby, already nicknamed Lili by her parents (swoon), is named after her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her late grandmother, Diana, The Princess of Wales.

A statement on the Archewell website announced the news.

“It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world,” the statement read.

“Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA. She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home,” the statement continued.

“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”

“This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family.”

The couple added a personal statement to the announcement: “On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”

The statement went on to add that mama and baby “are healthy and well, and settling in at home.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced Meghan’s pregnancy on Valentine’s Day, stating, “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”

Family friend and photographer Misan Harriman took the announcement photo.

During their interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, Meghan and Harry shared that they were expecting a baby girl, and Prince Harry’s excitement over becoming a father of two was evident.

“Now we’ve got our family… and we’ve got four of us,” he said.

Meghan announced the happy news after sharing that she miscarried in July, writing in in a breathtakingly honest and raw essay in The New York Times in November, “Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few.”

Meghan and Harry officially stepped down from their roles as senior royals last year. When the couple made their decision, they explained that their desire for a normal family life led them to make such a life-changing move.
