The bride has a surprising and sweet backstory about her MIL, who wore a bridal gown to her wedding

If you’ve ever planned a wedding, you know there are five million details that go into the day to make it go off without a hitch. Rarely (if ever) is asking what your mother-in-law is planning to wear to the big day one of them, but after you see this story you may want to put that question at the top of your list.

Former lawyer and soldier turned romance author, Amy Pennza, shared with the world what can only be described as the best story ever from her wedding (or anyone else’s, I might add). “My mother-in-law wore a wedding dress to my wedding. So, yeah, top that one, Twitter,” she wrote next to a picture of her in her bridal gown standing next to her husband’s mother, who is also wearing a bridal gown.

Her tweet was in response to a request by talk show host Jimmy Fallon who asked viewers to post their biggest wedding fails online using the hashtag #WeddingFail. Pennza definitely delivered. Twitter was basically in all-out crisis mode and ready to throw down in her defense after seeing the bonkers photo.

But after the image went viral, Pennza gave the world some pretty important insight into what went down that day — and it will change your whole view on the matter:

If you’re thinking to yourself, if she did this for her wedding, what’s it been like since then dealing with this woman, Pennza goes on to give us a little more background on her mother-in-law that will melt even the coldest of hearts. For starters, her mother-in-law grew up in extreme poverty, which is where her frugalness started, Pennza explains, because even though she doesn’t live that way anymore, you never know when it can all be taken from you.

Bless.

Pennza says this helps justify her choice of wedding-wear that day:

Just when you think you can’t possibly love this woman more, Pennza talks about the generosity of a woman who has dedicated her life to caring for others:

If you think her feelings are hurt about being called out for her choice of attire, you would be wrong:

Pennza tells Scary Mommy there’s always some sort of hilarity at weddings and it helps to take things in stride. “I know your wedding day is supposed to be a big deal, but it really is just one day. And if you have a big wedding (I had around 250 people), you can count on someone doing something a little off or wacky,” she says. “In all the days since then, my mother-in-law has proven over and over again how much she loves her family. And I couldn’t ask for a better wedding present than that!”

Though Pennza did suggest, if possible, to figure out what your MIL (and mom!) plans to wear to your wedding.

Four kids and many years later, Pennza wants the world to know that not only is her mother-in-law a kick-ass lady, all’s well that ends well:

And if they ever need a little levity, they always have that epic wedding picture to look back on.
