Full disclosure: I’ve never been interested in lawn care, gardening, or anything else revolving spending days confined to my own yard doing manual labor in the sun.
Recently, we’ve become homeowners, and now we have our own yard. That ownership, that feeling of it being mine (well, the bank’s, but you know) has made me want to get out there and get my hands dirty. To plant shit. To water shit. To yank up those damn weeds.
I’ve actually yanked up plants, and my neighbor was like “No, don’t throw that in the bin! That’s a flowering bush.” Then I replanted it.
So stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s are a whole new world for me. I love them, and I love a good DIY project, but then I get to the greenhouse area, and I am beyond overwhelmed. I want it all, and I want it now. But flowers are expensive, and some need shade, and some need sun, and some need a good combination of both of those things. So I leave empty-handed because by now all of my kids are crying and hungry.
Then I visited my friend who had all these adorable plants in mason jars, and vintage coffee mugs, and kitschy little planters all over her deck and porch. And she told me she got them from Amazon, and they just arrived on her doorstep in two damn days, and she just started planting them in little things she’d collected.
She wasn’t overwhelmed at all, and it turns out succulents are pretty damn easy to care for. Plus, they are affordable, so even if I do fail, maybe I can still pay the mortgage next month.
You get a variety, you get 20 plants, and it costs $40. They are pretty low maintenance, and they are all adorable. If it’s too much, you can split them with a friend or neighbor. People still do that sort of thing, right? (I’m trying to be more neighborly.)
People will notice them, and they are going to want to take them home. My friend gives them as gifts sometimes, and they are a huge hit. I have two, but she didn’t actually give them to me, it was more like, “I’m taking these because I need them. Okay, thanks, love you, bye.”
So, yes, Amazon has plants. They will deliver them straight to your door. You don’t even have to wear pants. Winning.
