I'll Have What She's Having: Ashley Hearon-Smith
We pick the brains of some of the most talented, stylish, and busy moms we know to find out what they do (and buy) to make their lives work.
As co-host of Scary Mommy Speaks, the new podcast which debuted at #1 in the Kids & Family category and offers an unfiltered look at today’s trends and topics through the lens of motherhood, Ashley Hearon-Smith loves talking about motherhood in all its pain and glory, especially relating stories of her two-year-old son. She also has a love of beauty, glamour, and the pursuit of great skin, which was born out of mornings watching her mom get ready for work. It continued to be fostered by years of working with celebrity talent (and their make-up artists) at Martha: The Martha Stewart Show, The Wendy Williams Show, and many years of performing as an actress and host.
“Here’s a fun fact: I have acne. Sometimes a little, other times a lot, but either way it’s here and I hate it. I’m always looking for a new way to get rid of the jerks. For a while I was obsessed with P50, but I’d heard so many great things about this stuff I decided to give it a try. At about 80% less expensive than P50, I’d say it’s a pretty great product. There is a trial and purge period while your skin gets used to it, but the glow after is so worth it.”
“These are EVERYTHING! These puppies are my favorite way to spot treat a pimple. After you’ve done your nighttime skin routine, these go right on top of of your pimple. They won’t stick if you’re using any face oils, but are pretty great on top of most other products. My cystic acne rears its ugly head every month and these are great at shrinking them down in size. (Don’t pick!!) Cosrx is an amazing K-Beauty brand and I’m pretty hooked on a few of their products.”
“I found this amazing oil on Instagram and have been a loyalist and advocate ever since! Just a couple of drops on your vulva (where hair grows) prevents ingrown hairs and dryness. I love that it encourages a step in my self-care routine I would otherwise ignore, and truth be told it’s helped with rejuvenating my vagina post baby in a lot of ways (wink wink). I love this product so much I got a bottle for everyone on the Scary Mommy Speaks team!”
“I’ve been using this stuff as my toner for years. Lots of people love the rose scent, which I’m sure is great, but I’m here for lemon. Lemon has natural antibacterial properties that aids in treating acne, and I’ll take all the help I can get. ”
“Ask any Cuban and they’ll happily school you on why this is a beloved part of their childhood. This perfume is unisex and traditionally put on Cuban babies and children. Although it’s become far more difficult to find, I put it on Sebastian and still use it on myself all the time. I put it in my hair in between washes, and on my chest and back after the shower— it helps keep me feeling fresh all day long. Don’t worry, it smells REALLY strong out of the bottle but it fades pretty quickly, leaving a very light floral cloud on you. And yes, I still use an additional perfume everyday!”
“I have very thick hair and a lot of it, so doing it myself is really a challenge! This is the easiest, and only way for me to do my hair well enough to look polished! Put them in dry hair before you get ready in the morning (make sure to use mousse), put on make-up, get dressed and take them out right before you leave the house. They take a couple of uses to get used to but they leave your hair shiny, voluminous and looking amazing!”
“Again with the adult acne! This machine was recommended to me by two different aestheticians. I love when they use high frequency during a facial, and have seen huge pimples absolutely disappear the next day. This at home version of the machine hasn’t been quite that magical, but it’s pretty great nonetheless. It treats acne, fine lines, firmness, and even aids in regrowing hair.”
“My Scary Mommy Speaks PIC Keri, always talks about this brand, so I had to try it one day when she brought it to set. It’s so amazing, I had to get it for myself. Not too thick, makes your face feel bouncy, and anything you’ve picked at on your face heals overnight. SOLD!”
“If you listen to the podcast, you know that I’m really trying to live sustainably, so I’ve been making little everyday switches that make a big impact, like these reusable cotton rounds. They get the job done, are machine washable and best of all, don’t end up in landfills.”
