How do you know if you’re wiping your vulva correctly? When cleaning and wiping your vagina and vulva, there is a right way and a wrong way. Madge the Vag talks to gynecologist Dr. Ashley Bartalot to get to the bottom (and front) of how to clean your vagina and vulva. Subscribe to Scary Mommy on YouTube.

Your vagina is its own filtering system, so do not put anything inside your vagina to clean it.

Always wipe from front to back to keep the bad bacteria from the backdoor from getting into the front. Although vaginal wipes are fine to use, make sure to stay away from anything scented and only wipe on the outside. When choosing toilet paper, higher plies may feel better and softer, but can lead to residue and an increased chance of getting bad bacteria in your vag. Consider patting your vag dry instead of wiping.

Do not use feminine deodorant sprays. These sprays may irritate your vulva and vagina, especially if they’re scented. And stay away from douching! No matter if your mom or your grandma did it. Remember, your vag is a self-cleaning oven!

Series Description: Madge the Vag is a quirky mom on a mission to spread (literally) the word on everything vagina. She may have a 1950s wardrobe, but approaches women’s vaginal health in a refreshing way that is very today. Madge highlights a taboo topic or challenging issue many women face but may be afraid to talk about. She interviews experts on a range of topics like public hair, yeast infections and sex.
