If motherhood has taught us anything, it’s that heroes don’t always wear capes. Maybe you discovered your superpower is “Keeping Chaos Out Of Frame On Zoom Calls.” Or “Appearing To Understand Third Grade Math.” It turns out that we’re all capable of a whole lot more than we thought possible.

Netflix’s new film We Can Be Heroes tells the story of what happens when alien invaders kidnap Earth’s superheroes and their kids are whisked away to a government safe house. Determined tween and born leader Missy Moreno will stop at nothing to rescue her superhero dad, Marcus Moreno. When she teams up with the rest of the superkids to escape their mysterious government babysitter Ms. Granada, they discover that if they’re going to save their parents, they’ll have to work together by using their unique powers — from elasticity to time control to predicting the future — to form an out-of-this-world team. Throughout the film, Missy reminds herself and the other kids to look within themselves and believe that they can be the next generation of heroes regardless of their age, size, or abilities.

We Can Be Heroes is a refreshing take on the typical superhero film. If the bright and fantastical setting looks vaguely familiar, it’s because the film was written, produced and directed by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who also gave us Spy Kids and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Thank you, Netflix. This film is the uplifting palate cleanser we need right now.

Inspired by the message of We Can Be Heroes, Scary Mommies asked their littles to draw their idea of what makes a hero, and here’s what they came up with.

“Super Mom” by Katelyn C. (age 15)

“My Mama” by Sally M. (age 9)

“Daddy” by Luciano T. (age 5)

“Doctor” by Alison S. (age 11)

“Coach Dave” by Olivia M. (age 10)

We Can Be Heroes is a great family film that reminds us that together, we’re unstoppable. It’s also the perfect way to kick off the new year.

Watch We Can Be Heroes now, only on Netflix.
