Your Guide To Creating A More Wholesome Easter Basket That Won’t Bum Out Your Kids

It’s probably safe to say that most of us don’t consider ourselves anti-candy. A couple of pieces here and there can be fun and who wants to take a position against fun? No one wants to be that parent.

But I think we can all agree that sometimes it gets a litttttle out of hand. I mean, when did every single holiday become an over-the-top candy feast? “Happy Arbor Day, kids! Come get your basket filled with chocolate trees and jelly bean seeds!”

And can we admit it isn’t always the kids who can’t control themselves when there are actual baskets of candy in the house? I mean, I’m not the only one who “helps” my kids finish their Halloween candy, am I?

We get it. You don’t want your kids to think you’re the lamest parents ever. And we aren’t suggesting you — ahem, the Easter Bunny — fill their baskets with dryer lint! No way. Here are some of our favorite simple hacks that will leave your kids feeling satisfied and won’t endanger your status as a Fun Mom.

Gardening Kits and Bug Boxes

Springtime is the perfect time to introduce kids to gardening and the excitement of growing their own plants, food, and flowers through eco-friendly gardening kits. You can find starter kits online that come with everything from heirloom veggie seeds and planters to an accessories bundle with gloves and tools for little hands. It’s never too early to get your tiny human a little more comfortable with the bugs and critters in their own backyard and teaching them about the amazingness of soil.

Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks

Who needs candy when you’ve got Annie’s Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks? They’re yummy little bunnies made with real organic fruit juice, Vitamin C, and absolutely ZERO gelatin — making them vegan and gluten free. Honestly, they’re so good you’re going to want to buy some extra packs just for your husband who considers snacks his first love.

Stickers

Stickers are the deviled eggs of Easter baskets — one of those things you might not always get for yourself but you’re always happy to see. Kids LOVE stickers! One caveat to this one? Include a notebook or something to stick them on. Otherwise, like glitter, you’ll find stickers all over your house for the rest of your life.

Cute Socks

Have you seen socks lately? Seriously. There’s a sock for literally every possibly interest. And just like a toothbrush as a stocking stuffer, kids need them anyway so you’re actually crossing something off your list! Grab a couple pairs with their favorite characters (don’t forget a bunny-themed pair!) and congratulate yourself for being so incredibly ahead of the game.

Cheddar Bunnies

The OG of wholesome AND yummy snacks, Organic Cheddar Bunnies are not only a kid pleaser, but they’re also seasonally appropriate and now crispier and cheesier tasting! What’s a better reminder of the promise of spring than little hopping bunnies? We’re talking springtime magic here, folks, so don’t forget to include Organic Bunny Grahams, too.

Cold Hard Cash Money

The way you play this one will depend a lot on your kids’ ages. For younger kids, a bunch of coins that add up to about 40 cents will get you squeals of delight. But be ready to hand over folding money to older kids or prepare to be greeted with eyerolls.

Books

When are books for kids a bad idea? Never. The answer is never. Because any time you can pop a book into a non-schoolwork scenario, it’s a huge step toward developing a kid’s lifetime love of reading. Plus, don’t forget to include a coloring book with a fresh set of crayons or pencils — you can never have enough of those and bright colors perk everything up.

We know grabbing a few bags of candy and calling it a day is super enticing. But you won’t regret taking a step back from sugar overload. Surprise them with a different kind of basket that won’t bum them out — and may even leave ‘em thinking you’re actually cool.

We got you, Mom.
