Trump announces he’s being released from the hospital tonight and tells Americans to not “be afraid” of the virus

In a tweet almost too callous to be believed (though not totally because hello, who are we talking about here?) President Donald Trump announced that after being admitted to Walter Reed Medical Center on Friday due to complications from COVID-19 that he’s leaving the hospital this evening. Trump being Trump, he couldn’t just share that news and possibly some humble tidbit about finally grasping the very real dangers this virus can pose to regular, everyday people who don’t have access to top-notch healthcare like he does. Of course not. He made sure to tell them to not “be afraid” of the virus that’s killed over 209,000 people and counting.

“I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!” he tweeted just moments ago.

Let’s break this down real quick. Trump has famously downplayed the COVID-19 pandemic from the very start up to and including his refusal to wear a mask until mid-July. He has insinuated that it will just “disappear” like “a miracle” and most recently, mocked Vice President Joe Biden during last week’s debate for wearing “the biggest mask I’ve ever seen.”

In short, the president is an asshole and can never be humbled — but I guess some of us held on to a single shred of foolish hope that being leveled for several days by this horrid virus might bring reality close enough that he would be more empathetic toward the rest of the country suffering from the pandemic and its myriad effects, both health-wise and economic.

Ha. Haha. Hahahahahahaha. Oh sweet summer children we were. What the fuck were we thinking?

This is, after all, the same man who insisted on parading around last night via chauffeured car to wave at his supporters and prove that he’s a Big Boy handling the virus very well, thereby endangering the Secret Service agents in the car with him. “To pay their respects?” Is he kidding? What does he think he is, a mob boss? Fuck off.

This is the same man who more or less shrugged and said “it is what it is” in regard to the immense and heartbreaking toll this pandemic is taking on so many thousands of Americans. People are dying hooked up to ventilators, alone, with family unable to come in and say goodbye, and this stupid ass is telling us to not “let it dominate your life?” Is he kidding?

Sadly, he’s not. This is him. Whatever foolish hope any of us had after his 2016 election that he might someday display an ounce of humanity is now fully and effectively shattered. He only fared well with this virus because he has access to absolute top-notch healthcare and experimental treatments while some Americans struggle to even get a COVID-19 test in a timely fashion. The fact is, in this country, under his rule, millions of Americans are rightly afraid of COVID-19 because Trump literally wants to take away their healthcare in the middle of this terrifying pandemic.

Bottom line, even what should’ve been a watershed moment for the worst president in all of history was just one more opportunity to be a heartless asshole who has proven again and again, every day, every hour, every minute since his unfortunate election that he’s undeserving of the title — or a sliver of our empathy.
