Elmo has been a Sesame Street favorite for decades. While the show celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019, Elmo didn’t debut until 1980. For a guy who was originally designed as a generic background monster, he’s done a pretty great job at making generations of children fall in love with him. As Elmo has been the same age as many of his toddler viewers for years, he’s an expert in how learning shapes, ABCs, and 123s can be fun, how important eating fruit and veggies is, and why kindness is necessary.
We’ve compiled a list of some seriously wholesome Elmo quotes that show off just how wonderful a children’s character he is. Read on for some iconic lines from our favorite red monster.
“Elmo is so happy to see you! Welcome to Sesame Street!”
“Elmo help? …What can Elmo do?”
“Elmo’s got an apple, yaaaaaay!”
“Wow! That was a fun ride. Gee, look at this place. Where’s Elmo’s Blanket? And- and… and where is Elmo? Elmo doesn’t think he’s on Sesame Street anymore.”
“What’s that in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a really big, blue furry bird? …It’s Super Grover!”
“Elmo thought Christmas everyday would make people happy, Lightning. But it’s making them sad. The Fix-it-Shop is closed, Big Bird is crying, nobody is celebrating. And the Count says Christmas isn’t special anymore because it’s every day. Maybe Santa’s right. Every day can’t be Christmas. That wouldn’t be such a treat. You can get tired of chocolate candy when that’s all you eat. Every day can’t be your birthday. That wouldn’t be such fun. Too many birthdays aren’t as nice as one.”
“Someone just told Elmo yesterday was Talk in Third Person Day. Elmo doesn’t know what that is but it sounds fun. Can Elmo play?”
“It’s time to make up a musical!”
“Elmo loves to stay nice and clean!”
“Lala-lala lala-lala Elmo’s song. Lala-lala lala-lala Elmo’s song. Me write the music, me write the words, that’s Elmo’s song.”
“Na na na, na na na, Elmo’s World!”
“Elmo loves to learn, learn about it all. The things that are big and the things that are small!”
“Oh look, it’s Mr. Noodle’s brother, Mr. Noodle.”
“Elmo loves you!”
