Savvy Girl Scout Sells Cookies Outside Of Marijuana Dispensary

by Ashley Austrew

A Portland Girl Scout decided to sell cookies to customers at a local marijuana dispensary.

In the good old days, Girl Scouts went door to door peddling their baked goods to the masses, but with modern times come marketing innovations, and now the tiny geniuses are just selling outside of marijuana dispensaries instead.

An anonymous Oregon Girl Scout recently spent an afternoon selling cookies from a table set up outside the Foster Buds Marijuana Dispensary in Portland, where she apparently raked in the dough. According to her aunt, they had a crowd at the table within minutes of setting up. The dispensary even got in on the act, offering a discount to customers who brought in a box of cookies they’d purchased from the girl’s table.

The girl’s aunt tells KATU the Girl Scouts organization doesn’t condone selling cookies in front of pot dispensaries, but “it’s not against the rules.” A spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington disagreed, saying, “If a minor cannot enter a premises unaccompanied, then she should not sell Girl Scout Cookies in front of the premises.”

As most of us know, this smart little cookie isn’t the first to take advantage of pot smokers’ cravings for sweet and salty snacks. In 2014, San Francisco Girl Scout Danielle Lei sold 117 boxes of cookies in two hours while standing outside the Green Cross pot dispensary in her hometown. Lei became a viral sensation and she’s had copycats ever since, but many adults are still uncomfortable with the decision to sell at such an “adult” location.

In the comments on KATU‘s Facebook page, viewers weighed in and called the Portland sales “inappropriate” and a “horrible example.” Wrote one woman, “Am I the only one who thinks it is wrong and poor judgement on the parents part that their CHILD knows what the munchies are? I mean come on. Even if you smoke weed as a parent, it should still be your responsibility to protect your children from these things until they are adults.”

Whatever your personal feelings about marijuana, it’s hard to argue that this isn’t a smart business decision. Jokes about munchies and marijuana are as old as time, and with the legalization of pot in some places, it only makes sense to capitalize by selling tasty snacks.

If you don’t happen to live somewhere with a legal marijuana dispensary or can’t seem to find cookies in your area, there’s a tool on the Girl Scouts website you can use to find local sellers. If you’re in Portland, well, you know where to look. It’s unlikely this kid will ever earn herself a tiny marijuana leaf-shaped merit badge, but you can hardly fault her for going with such a brilliant strategy.
