Few celebrities are more scrutinized than Kim Kardashian, especially during pregnancy, but luckily the haters haven’t stopped Kim from keeping it real. Earlier this week, Kardashian tweeted an update for fans letting us know she’s six weeks away from her due date with her second baby, and in a refreshingly honest move, she also mentioned her weight gain thus far.

Kardashian has become something of a body positivity advocate after taking heat for her weight during both of her pregnancies. The first time around, the media jumped on her for gaining too much and implied she was having health issues because of her (totally normal) size. This time around, people have accused her of faking her pregnancy, either because she’s too skinny or her belly looks too big. As women, we’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t, and even a Kardashian is no exception. Kim’s tweeted about her weight gain before, once at 20 pounds and again at 45 pounds. A few months ago, she even shot back at the haters by posting a nude pregnant selfie and saying, “I’ve learned to love myself at every stage. I’m going to get even bigger & that’s beautiful too! I’m blessed to even be pregnant!”

As most of us are aware, Kim struggled to conceive her second child and was very open about the long and difficult road to getting pregnant. She also openly admitted on her website last month that she “hates” being pregnant and called it the “worst experience of my life.” She’s held nothing back this time around, and her honesty is so important.

Many readily dismiss Kardashian as a “famous for nothing” reality star, an attention whore, or as some other hideous insult, but the bottom line is she has a platform. Using that platform to be up front about issues thousands of other woman are dealing with is a good thing. We’re constantly bombarded with things like photos of Gisele Bündchen doing yoga naked while breastfeeding and rescuing a puppy from a burning building. We could all use a break from the parade of perfect mommies.

I want to hear about Kim’s struggles with infertility, pregnancy hate, and extra 52 pounds, and I like that she admits she has to work hard to get the weight off. I don’t love that the industry she’s in requires her to go to crazy extremes to look good, or how much pressure it puts on regular people like me, but I do like that someone in that world is at least being honest about the fact that it’s fucking difficult.

Love her or hate her, Kim Kardashian is doing us all a favor by helping to normalize pregnant bodies. She seems genuinely happy with where she is right now, and it’s a good reminder that there’s no reason our pregnancy or post-pregnancy bodies should ever make us feel ashamed.
