Pixar's Animal Abuse Short 'Kitbull' Will Make You Ugly Cry

This Pixar short film about two abused animals will manage to break and warm your heart

You’re going to need to prepare your heart for this one. Pixar released a short film about two abused animals and it will break you into one million pieces. Grab all the tissues and then give your pets a big, big hug afterwards.

Kitbull is a 2D animated short about an abused pitbull and an abused kitten who escape their awful lives together and form a sweet, loving friendship. It’s a very difficult watch but I promise that the end will make you feel so, so much happiness.

The film was made through Pixar’s SparkShorts program, which was created to “discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows.” Kitbull is one of the six shorts released, which all look equally beautiful and include stories about an earnest ball of yarn, two robots seeking freedom, and a little boy who floats in the air.

“These films are unlike anything we’ve ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare.” Jim Morris, the president of Pixar Animation Studios, noted in a statement.

Kitbull‘s director Rosana Sullivan explained that she first got the idea for her film thanks to a cat video.

“I loved watching cat videos in times of stress,” she said in a behind-the-scenes video. “At first, I just wanted to draw something that made me feel good and was fun, but it evolved into something more personal to me eventually. Growing up, I was always very sensitive and very shy, and had actually a lot of trouble making connections, making friendships. So I related to this kitten because it never really stepped outside of its comfort zone to be vulnerable and make a connection.”

The artists at Pixar continue to make all of our hearts feel things with their films. Last December, the studio released a film called Bao about a lonely mom who “adopts” a steamed dumpling. I know it sounds a little bit out there but it’s beyond delightful AND was nominated for an Oscar.

“I was working at Pixar as a story writer, working on the film Inside Out, but was itching to do something creatively on my own. I was brainstorming one night, and the image popped in my head of an old Chinese lady nuzzling this little dumpling boy to death, and I had to draw it out on paper immediately,” writer and director Domee Shi told Sup China. “From that one drawing, the idea started forming.”

Once again, people on the internet could barely contain themselves.
