Live Event: The Back To School Debacle
by Alison BucaloThis school year is starting during a pandemic and parents are faced with the decision of whether to send their children back to school. Many of us fear for our children transmitting Covid-19 and others of us fear that our kids will lose the education they can only get from in-person learning. And of course, we all just need a break!
On this session of Live.Work.Thrive, we will take a deep dive into the back to school debacle many of us are struggling with. This school year is going to go down in the history books as one of the most challenging on record. There are so many issues at play here, that for many of us it seems like there are no easy choices.
Scary Mommy Executive Producer and Moderator, Micaela Birmingham, talks with experts in the field to find out. Our guests include Dr. Kate Connor, Medical Director at The Rales Health Center at KIPP Baltimore and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Amy McKinney, Teacher & Influencer, The Unique Classroom. We also have Karen Alford, UFT Vice President of Elementary Schools and Dr. Keisha Scarlett, Chief of Equity Partnerships, and Engagement, Seattle Public Schools.
Education is essential and it is important to acknowledge that those of us who have choices this school year, albeit very difficult ones to make – not every family has a choice, and staying home if you so choose is a privilege.
With that in mind, the goal of this session is to have a balanced discussion and share fact based information from experts, that will help each of us make the decision that is right for our own families. Because the goal is to reduce our stress and not add to it!
