'The Voice' Coaches Perform Touching Rendition Of 'More Than Words'
‘The Voice’ coaches absolutely nail the 1990 ballad
Whether you’re a lover of NBC’s hit show The Voice and its coaches or not, this video is going to give you the chills. We all knew that individually, the coaches have amazing voices but the four of them singing together is something you have to hear to believe.
This year’s coaches — John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, and Gwen Stefani — decided to cover the song “More Than Words” by Extreme. Entertainment Weekly released the exclusive video of the quartet this week. The coaches, joined by host Carson Daly on the acoustic guitar, came together, circling the show’s famed red chairs to sing the ballad, and their harmonization is the stuff of legends.
While we’re used to seeing the singers perform with their teams and individually on the show, this group performance is something special. We’re also used to seeing them making fun of each other, fighting for singers, and generally horsing around on set. But this performance was a really touching moment.
One famous voice noticeably absent is that of coach and lead singer of the band Maroon 5, Adam Levine, who announced he’d be leaving the hit show after eight years. Clarkson told Extra when she first heard the news of Levine’s departure she was kind of in shock, adding, “But I kind of get it. He’s been doing it for eight years — that’s a long time. He’s got a couple kids. Still has a career. Still touring. It’s a very rigorous schedule fitting everything in.”

Clarkson had some drama of her own during last season’s taping of the show. While hosting the Billboard Awards and belting out numerous hits on live television, she was suffering a major medical crisis. After her performance she underwent emergency surgery for a burst appendix, then somehow bounced back a week later to finish filming on The Voice.
While the group is in perfect harmony in the video, soon they’ll be competing against each other as coaches when The Voice returns for its new season on September 23rd. Though the absence of Levine will likely change the dynamics a bit between the coaches, Shelton and Stefani are back together on the show, and from the looks they gave each other throughout the video, are still very much in love.
The coaches all have a lot on their plates. Clarkson just started her new talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and the others still tour. They also all have kids and manage appearances, recording new albums, and filming the The Voice as well. Luckily, they still have time for breathtaking ballads like this and we’re so thankful.
