Bindi Irwin announced a break from social media, then hinted at her mental health being part of the reason why

We love following Bindi Irwin. The Dancing With the Stars champ has such a fascinating life, working with her family at the Australia Zoo, and now, raising a family of her own, since the arrival of her beautiful daughter, Grace Warrior, in March. Since her dad’s tragic death when she was a child, she’s grown and overcome so much, and we love cheering on all her accomplishments, which she’s long documented on social media. But today, Irwin announced on Instagram that she’s taking a break from the platform.

“Hi guys, Just a note to say thank you for your support. I’m taking a break from social media and most of my work in the public eye for a month to be with my beautiful daughter and my wonderful family,” she wrote. “I feel tremendously grateful to share our life and conservation work with you but I need some time to focus on the happiness that is my family (both human and animal).”

Irwin added, “You can keep up with our adventures by following my family and Australia Zoo on social media.”

But then, after placing a blue emoji heart in the caption of her post, Irwin went on to hint that part of the reason for her break could be recent struggles with her mental health.

“Recently, I’ve had many people reaching out to share their own stories of working hard to protect their mental health. Thank you for sharing and speaking your truth,” she wrote. “To my friends who are dealing with depression, anxiety and other battles every day – I see you. These issues are very real and deserve to be discussed and addressed.”

Irwin continued, “Surround yourself with the light of people who genuinely care about you and will support you during the good times and the hard times. Remember there are helplines available. Mental health deserves more understanding and support instead of being dismissed or patronised. You are absolutely worthy of love and kindness.”

It’s an important message, and it’s 100 percent true. Prioritizing your mental health is vital, despite the stigma that still, for some reason, surrounds mental illness. As much as we love watching Irwin’s life through her own eyes on social media, we’re glad for the reminder, and especially glad she’s taking such good care of her own mental health when she needs to.
