Rapper Cardi B blames postpartum hormones for random crying jags and it’s so #relatable
Cardi B has always been a bit of an open book — and it’s no different now that she’s a mom of two. The rapper took to Twitter with a complaint about postpartum hormones that’ll have moms everywhere saying YUP.
“Can’t wait till these weird postpartum hormones completely leave my body,” she wrote. “I be crying for no reason.”
Cardi and her fellow rapper hubby Offset welcomed their second child together in early September, a baby boy whose name hasn’t been revealed just yet. Weeks later, those baby blues are apparently still hitting Cardi hard, and yeah, that sounds just about right unfortunately.
So many moms have experienced something similar — personally, I can still remember sitting down for my nightly 7 p.m. crying time after the birth of my first child. By some estimates, around half of all moms experience something similar. But it still feels like something that doesn’t get talked about enough — as evidenced by all the people in Cardi’s replies thanking her for speaking out.
Cardi B was just as candid after the birth of daughter Kulture, sharing her struggles with postpartum depression back then as well. “I thought I was going to avoid it. When I gave birth, the doctor told me about postpartum, and I was like, ‘Well, I’m doing good right now, I don’t think that’s going to happen,’” Cardi said in a 2019 interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “But out of nowhere, the world was heavy on my shoulders.”
Like many other new moms, too, Cardi has felt the pressure to “snap back” to her pre-baby body. So many celebrity mamas make it look incredibly easy, but Cardi has been vocal about the fact that it is very much not. “I didn’t [think] it would take my body so long to heal, like, I thought six weeks was gonna be good enough. No, bro, my ass is broken, this baby broke my ass,” she told Vogue after the birth of Kulture.
“Doing a tour with Bruno Mars in, like, the biggest arenas and I didn’t want to go on tour and not be able to dance or perform properly, not be able to get choreography right, because my body is extremely weak right now. Like, so weak. That postpartum shit is really real, y’all.” Again, YUP.
Celebrities aren’t always the most relatable (like, have you seen Cardi’s collection of Hermes bags?!), but there’s no doubt in my mind that her candor on all things postpartum is going to make a difference to some mom out there struggling with the same kind of issues — who now knows that she’s far from the only one.
