The Octonauts (and not “The Aquanauts,” contrary to popular belief) is a British Netflix kids series, and likely the subject of your little one’s latest obsession. It’s a sweet premise –as with the best of children’s shows and entertainment — and stars a cast of fun undersea explorers. The crew is always willing and ready to leave their “Octopod” home base and dive deep, uncovering new underwater worlds on their adventures.
If your child is like most kids, simply watching the hit series is not enough—they’re a bonafide Octo-cadet who needs more Octo-fun in their life! In other words, it’s time to buy them some Octonaut toys to play with all day long, leaving them for you to subsequently trip over in the living room when you finally have a moment of quiet to yourself. But as it turns out, it’s not always as simple as heading to Amazon and clicking “Add to Cart.”
Why are Octonauts toys so expensive?
We agree, Mama — if you’ve done any searching for Octonaut toys, you’ve seen some ridiculously high prices. Others are nearly impossible to find (made even harder if you’re mistakenly searching for “Aquanauts toys”). With the popularity of the show, these toys have become a hot commodity (think: bidding wars for Beanie Babies), plus some are more available in the UK, where the show originated. Their status is putting them on the brink of being collector’s items, although all your kid really wants to do is play with their favorite characters and Gups. To clarify, Gups are the vehicles used by the Octonauts, often underwater … but you probably already knew that.
With all that said, are you unsure where to begin your search for the best Octonaut toys? Don’t worry, Mama—we’ve got your back, as always. Here are some of the best Octonauts toys on the market that kids will be loving in 2021.
Octonauts Character Toys
This interactive toy is not the usual figurine-type toy. It allows your child to play doctor and help Peso get the snot sea cucumber back on its — er — feet. Along with a huggably plush Peso, it comes with everything your child needs to get the job done right: A medical bag complete with a stethoscope, thermometer, and two bandages (one plastic, one fabric). It also comes with a creature card and an Octo tablet that spits out fun facts.
Chances are, your little one owns a bunch of these Fisher-Price figurine toys, so might as well add The Octonauts their collection. The set includes the eight main characters: Inkling, Dashi, Tunip, Tweak, Peso, Kwazii, Barnacles, and Shellington. Each figurine is about two to three inches tall, so they’re perfectly portable for all your little one’s adventures. As it happens, they’re also just the right size for you to step on by accident, but hey, it’s worth it!
This elaborate play set includes the entire Octonauts team and showcases in their Octopod home base so your child can have all the undersea fun they dream of having. There are two buttons — one inside the Launch Bay and one on the front of the play set — that activate the Octopod’s blue lights and shouts fun phrases from the whole Octo crew. There’s so much to explore with detailed set, that your kid’s enjoyment may actually be worth the price tag.
Octonauts Toy Gups/Vehicles
The Octonaut Gup-Q is inspired by the hammerhead shark, which you can clearly see by its clever design. When your child presses the fin, it activates the searchlights and turns into a glow-in-the-dark toy. Even better, it works both in and out of water, so it can also be used as a bath toy (yesss!). This set includes Gup-Q, Kwazii (who’s decked out in his Octo-Glow suit), a rescue towline, and a rescue basket and curious sea creature.
This interactive toy lets your child explore, rescue, and protect the Octonaut home base with their favorite aquatic friends! It features the GUP-D, of course — which can be submerged for underwater adventures — along with Lieutenant Barnacles, who’s at the ready while clad in his deep sea suit. (It comes with a blue crab friend, too!) But the best part of this vehicle is the drill that spins and squirts water, making bath time even more of a blast.
Underwater play is fun, but so is above water play! This set includes Captain Barnacles in his GUP-H—a vehicle suitable for fun in both the air and the sea (or, more likely, the tubby). When the propeller is pressed, the GUP-H’s rescue basket lowers for rescue missions, and with a turn of the crank, the helicopter propellors rotate and lift the rescue line. The legs even fold under for more aerodynamic flying (and also, storage). Mission accomplished!
If your child can’t decide between excavating or underwater play, this Octonauts toy is everything their young imagination dreams of and more. It’s the perfect vehicle for exploratory play—it hauls, lifts and even scoops up sea goop! The lever slides to lift the Gup’s arms and can load tons of slime rocks on top. So much fun!
This toy is so cool, you won’t even mind playing with it alongside your child. The Gup-A has working, illuminating headlights and a spinning crank propellor, plus this set comes with a handful of fun accessories like a fishing net, an angler fish (in desperate need of rescue, of course), and more. It even makes for easy cleanup because you can store all of the tiny pieces inside the vehicle when playtime’s all done. Fun for all!
