Naming A Baby This Year? Here Are 2018's Most Popular Names By State
Every year since the 1880s, the Social Security Administration has kept track of what people are naming their bouncing bundles of joy (or tiny poop machines, whatever you want to call them).
A hundred years ago, in 1919, the top five most popular girls’ names were Mary, Helen, Dorothy, Margaret, and Ruth — pretty different from today, when Emma, Olivia, Ava, Isabella, and Sophia reign supreme.
But for boys, a hundred years ago doesn’t look quite so different; John, William, James, Robert, and Charles have now become Liam, Noah, William, James, and Logan.
Baby naming trends stay pretty consistent throughout the United States, with most areas adhering to the national top five. There are a few outliers, of course — southerners love the name Paisley, Hazel was big in Utah, Genesis made rank in D.C., and cultural influences can be felt in places like Texas and New Mexico where Santiago and Mateo made the list. And Aurora rated in the top five in Alaska, no doubt in tribute to the state’s famous Aurora Borealis (also known as the Northern Lights).
Read on to see the most popular names for the newest residents of your state.

So there you have it: the names that will be on every kindergarten roster (and graduation program, class of 2036, where the Emmas and Liams will probably zoom across the stage via jet pack because holy crap that sounds futuristic). Will these same names still take the throne in the next couple of years, or will they be unseated by Arias and Julians? Only time — and trends — will tell.
